Backpacking 101 Lecture Series

"Outdoor Clothing" is the first course in the Backpacking 101 lecture series. It is the first step in your journey to gaining the knowledge and skills you will need to explore the backcountry. The scope of the Backpacking 101 series is to provide clear and sound coverage of the current concepts, techniques, and challenges involved in the pursuit of exploring the backcountry and to provide a fundamental understanding of each topic covered.  Our objective with this series is to:

  1. To have a clear understanding of the basics of backcountry skills. To teach you how to be “safe and comfortable in the backcountry.
  2. To learn the inherent risks and challenges of the backcountry.
  3. To develop the skills necessary to mitigate those risks and develop strategies to overcome those challenges.   

Welcome to Course 1 - Outdoor Clothing

In this course we will cover the proper clothing you need to explore your world and immerse yourself into the wild. The course begins by defining why you need proper clothing and the importance of regulating your body temperature. From there, we will cover the different types of fabrics used and why they are special. Next, the course goes into how to apply a layering technique in order to maximize the desired effectiveness. Finally we will put all these elements together so you can build yourself an effective clothing system for your next outdoor adventure. The course is outlined as such:
